Rambo 3 (Rambo III) was released by Taito in 1989. Rambo 3 was a rail shooter game that featured Rambo and Colonel Trautman as playable characters. It was based on the Sylvester Stallone movie of the same name, whereby Rambo went about the business of rescuing Colonel Trautman, who had been taken hostage in Afghanistan while helping defend the Mujahedeen from the Soviet invasion. From a third-person perspective, Rambo would have to blast through contingents of enemy soldiers using various weapons with crosshairs, as well as fight tank bosses at the end of each level.

Following the massive success of Sega's Ikari Warriors and Commando, Taito secured the license to put players straight into the boots of Vietnam veteran John Rambo on a perilous rescue mission through the rugged terrain of Soviet-occupied Afghanistan. Unlike its console counterparts, the arcade cabinet capitalized on explosive, scaled-sprite graphics and bombastic sound design, capturing the gritty atmosphere of late-80s action cinema. Players guide Rambo as he infiltrates heavily fortified enemy encampments, rescues captive Afghan freedom fighters, and takes down waves of Spetsnaz soldiers, armored personnel carriers, and attack helicopters. Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard run-and-gun shooters where characters face only forward, Rambo III uniquely combines overhead directional blasting with pseudo-3D rail-shooting sequences. Players control Rambo utilizing an eight-way directional joystick and a dedicated fire button, alongside a secondary button to trigger his signature explosive arsenal. As Rambo navigates hostile valleys, caves, and fortress courtyards, he automatically wields an assault rifle with unlimited standard ammunition, but players must strategically deploy limited supplies of devastating explosive arrows and heavy mortars to clear out clustered tanks, turrets, and elite bosses. Power-ups scattered across the battlefield upgrade firepower, restore health, or provide temporary invulnerability. The gameplay loop demands constant movement, as enemies swarm the screen from all angles, requiring precise timing to dodge incoming mortar shells, sniper fire, and relentless infantry charges while managing environmental hazards.
