The Last Blade

Overview & History

Released by SNK in 1997 for the Neo Geo arcade hardware, The Last Blade (known in Japan as Bakumatsu Roman: Gekka no Kenshi) stands as a masterpiece of late-90s weapon-based fighting games. Set during the turbulent Bakumatsu period at the end of Japan's Edo era, the storyline weaves historical elements with Japanese mythology. Players follow a diverse cast of swordsmen, shrine maidens, and wandering ronin as they attempt to seal the gates of hell, which were accidentally opened by the antagonist Kagami, threatening to plunge the mortal realm into eternal darkness. SNK refined their sprite-based engine to deliver breathtaking hand-drawn atmospheric stages, ranging from burning temples to autumn forests, accompanied by a haunting traditional soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The Last Blade distinguishes itself through its innovative battle systems. Before a match begins, players select one of two fighting styles: Power or Speed. The Power style sacrifices speed for devastating damage, allows players to cancel special moves into super moves, and grants access to the screen-clearing "Super Desperation Move" when health is low. Conversely, the Speed style emphasizes mobility, enabling players to chain normal attacks into rapid special move sequences, utilize "Speed Cancels," and execute "Aerial Resuscitation" combos. Furthermore, the game introduced the versatile "Deflect" (Hajiki) mechanic, mapped to a dedicated button, allowing players to parry incoming attacks from standing or crouching positions and instantly counter-attack. The iconic roster features memorable movesets, such as Kaede's lightning-fast rapid slashes, Moriya Minakata's precise aesthetic iaijutsu counters, and Akari Shinmen's quirky talisman-based magic.
