Description

Players choose one of eight international fighters and compete to be the best in the world.

Players choose from six male and two martial arts fighters, each with their own unique style. The fighters travel around the world and battle in one-on-one, hand-to-hand tournaments to determine who is the best.

Fighters travel from city to city challenging other martial artists in a “best two out of three” round fight. Each fighter has an assortment of special power moves and occasionally items in the background may be destroyed by the combat.

This game was Data East’s answer to Capcom’s Street Fighter II – The World Warrior series of games.

Fighter's History

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1993 for the arcade platform, Fighter's History arrived squarely during the golden age of 2D fighting games. Directed by Akira Sakamoto, the title achieved unexpected notoriety due to its striking similarities to Capcom's Street Fighter II, leading to a famous copyright infringement lawsuit. Despite the legal drama—which Capcom ultimately lost because Data East owned the patents for its standard six-button arcade layout—the game carved out its own quirky legacy in fighting game history. The storyline revolves around a global martial arts tournament hosted by the mysterious mastermind Karnov, a fire-breathing circus strongman from Data East's own 1987 platformer. Fighters from around the globe converge to test their unique disciplines, ranging from savate and tai chi to drunken boxing.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike many contemporaries, Fighter's History introduced a distinct tactical layer: the Weak Point system. Every character wears specific gear or clothing—such as Ray's headband, Matlok's shoulder pads, or Feilin's ribbons—that glows and flashes after absorbing a certain amount of damage. Landing repeated hits on these glowing zones stuns the opponent, leaving them vulnerable to punishing combo attacks and turning the tide of a round. The game utilizes a traditional six-button arcade configuration: three punches and three kicks graded by strength. Special moves are executed via classic motion inputs like quarter-circle rolls and charge commands. Character rosters feature memorable combatants like Karnov himself, the gymnastics-infused Ryoko, and the electric-whip-wielding Karnov henchman, Clown, offering a surprisingly deep competitive rhythm beneath its derivative exterior.
