Description

Martial Champion is a versus fighting game similar in concept to Street Fighter II. There are ten characters to choose from, each representing his or her own country. The main protagonist is a Japanese martial artist named Jin; others include his countryman Zen, a kabuki fighter; a Chinese kung-fu expert and a vampire from Hong-Kong; an Egyptian princess; a scimitar fighter from Saudi Arabia; a spear-wielding Kenyan warrior; a French weapons specialist; and two North Americans – an eyepatched soldier and a blonde female ninja-like fighter.

Martial Champion

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1993, Martial Champion entered the fierce 2D fighting game arena dominated by Capcom's Street Fighter II and SNK's Fatal Fury. Diverging from Konami's traditional beat-'em-up roots, this arcade title presented a brutal, mythological tournament where ten international warriors vie for supremacy before an enigmatic, god-like overlord named Ratzinger. While it never achieved the ubiquitous mainstream status of its rivals, the game carved out a distinct niche thanks to its heavy emphasis on weapon-based combat, detailed sprite work, and an atmospheric, dark fantasy setting that blended ancient traditions with gritty arcade action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Martial Champion utilizes a responsive six-button arcade layout, assigning three buttons to punches and three to kicks. What sets it apart is the prominent integration of melee weaponry and supernatural projectiles. The roster features memorable fighters like the nimble ninja Titi, the trident-wielding Egyptian warrior Sphinx, and the ferocious saber-tooth-riding beastman Bobby. Each character boasts a unique arsenal that dictates their spacing and recovery frames. For instance, Goldarn wields a massive broadsword with devastating reach, but leaves wide openings if parried. The game also introduced a stamina/stun meter alongside health bars, rewarding aggressive offense and careful blocking. Special moves require precise quarter-circle or charge inputs, leading to fiery dragon-breath attacks, electrified trident lunges, and devastating desperation supers executed when health drops to critical levels.
