Description

Based upon the movie sequel of the same name. You play RoboCop whose mission is to find and destroy cyborg drug dealer Cain, the corrupt RoboCop-II while following your directives to serve the public trust, protect the innocent and uphold the law.

The game follows the basic premise of the movie, but has some major sequential differences. It is mostly side-scrolling shoot-em-up, with some levels viewed from behind RoboCop and providing a targeting reticle with which to kill generic criminals.

RoboCop 2

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1991, RoboCop 2 is a gritty, coin-op run-and-gun arcade adaptation of the satirical sci-fi sequel. Moving away from the side-scrolling beat-'em-up style of its predecessor, this iteration leans heavily into intense, frantic multi-directional shooting across dystopian Detroit landscapes overrun by the addictive narcotic "Cain." Players step back into the titanium boots of Alex Murphy to eradicate rogue street punks, heavily armed mercenaries, and ultimately face off against the colossal, brain-extracted cybernetic nightmare, RoboCop 2 (Cain). The game is celebrated for its digitized speech samples directly from the film, dark atmospheric synth tracks, and notoriously brutal difficulty curve that demanded a steady stream of quarters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, RoboCop 2 incorporates a dynamic aiming system allowing players to lock their stance and fire in eight directions, perfectly capturing Murphy's rigid, methodical movement. The game features traditional action stages interspersed with high-tension first-person shooting bonus rounds where players must calibrate Murphy's targeting system or dismantle the deadly Cain prototype circuit-by-circuit. Throughout the levels, players can collect specialized weapon upgrades, including three-way spread shots and high-velocity armor-piercing rounds, alongside baby food jars and OCP repair kits to restore Murphy's dwindling structural integrity. Boss encounters require precision timing, forcing players to exploit environmental hazards and enemy telegraphs while managing a limited stock of heavy ammunition.
