Description

Professional wrestling experienced a sudden increase in popularity during the early 1980s, where many professional wrestling organizations were started all over the world. A severe rivalry existed among the organizations.

In order to resolve this conflict, 8 organizations combined to form the Capcom Professional Wrestling Association (CPWA), led by Victor Ortega, the CPWA’s first champion.

One day, Ortega suddenly vanished. He was considered to be the axis of the sport and his unexpected disappearance caused the CPWA to enter an age of confusion and disorder. The BPWA, a dark underground wrestling organization, chose to take advantage of this opportunity and began moving. With “Fighters of Muscle Bomber = Destiny” as the theme, the CPWA chief executives decided to hold a world tour called the “Crash Carnival,” to decide the new king of the CPWA.

The gong that determines the new “Master of Muscle Bomber” is sounded…

Saturday Night Slam Masters

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1993, Saturday Night Slam Masters (known in Japan as Muscle Bomber: The Body Explosion) injected the developer’s legendary fighting-game DNA into the bombastic world of professional wrestling. Developed concurrently with Street Fighter II, the game even features a crossover appearance by the iconic mayor of Metro City, Mike Haggar. Set against a backdrop of a global wrestling cartel led by the nefarious villain The Scorpion, the storyline plays out as a chaotic, high-stakes tournament where grapplers vie for the ultimate championship belt. Unlike typical 1v1 fighters, Slam Masters leans heavily into multi-character brawls, supporting up to four simultaneous players in frenetic tag-team battles. Its distinct visual style, blending Capcom’s signature chunky sprite work with character designs overseen by manga artist Tetsuo Hara (creator of Fist of the North Star), gives the title an unmistakable, hyper-masculine aesthetic that stands proudly apart from its contemporaries.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Beneath its wrestling facade, Saturday Night Slam Masters functions much like a beat-em-up fused with a traditional fighting game. Players select from a diverse roster of eight unique competitors—ranging from the voodoo-infused Jumbo Flapjack to the masked luchador El Stingray and the acrobatic Titan The Great Bullet. Instead of depleting a health bar to win a round, matches are decided by securing a traditional three-count pinfall or forcing an opponent to submit via agonizing holds. The control layout utilizes a standard 6-button arcade configuration divided into punch, kick, and jump inputs. Executing moves relies on rapid button-mashing, directional holds, and proximity-based grapples rather than complex quarter-circle motions. When an opponent is dazed, players can whip them into the elastic ropes for momentum-based clotheslines, hurl them out of the ring into ringside crowds, or execute devastating signature top-rope maneuvers. In tag-team modes, partners can execute synchronized double-team attacks or leap into the ring to break up pinfalls, adding a frantic layer of tactical chaos to every squared-circle encounter.
