Released by SNK in 1981, Fantasy is an overlooked vertical scrolling arcade gem that predates the developer's later iconic fighting game dominance. Eschewing standard platforming tropes, the game casts the player as a brave, turban-wearing adventurer tasked with rescuing a captive princess from the clutches of a villainous green-skinned dragon. Unlike its contemporaries, Fantasy combines aerial combat with vertical climbing mechanics, requiring precise timing to navigate multi-tiered scaffolding stages while fending off persistent flocks of hostile birds, fire-breathing lizards, and mystical aerial beasts across vibrant, distinctly retro pixel-art landscapes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop revolves around vertical progression and projectile management. Players must ascend continuously shifting ladders and ledges while avoiding hazards and enemies. The protagonist's primary offense relies on throwing curved boomerangs that loop back upon deployment, creating a unique dynamic where players must account for both the outward and returning flight paths of their weapon to defeat flying threats. Power-ups scattered across the platforms grant temporary invincibility, score multipliers, or altered projectile properties.
