Ninja Baseball Bat Man

Overview & History

Developed by Irem and released in Japanese and North American arcades in 1993, Ninja Baseball Bat Man (known in Japan as Yakyuu Kakutou Ninja Baseball Bat Man) is a wonderfully eccentric, four-player side-scrolling beat-'em-up. The storyline kicks off when the Baseball Hall of Fame's treasured golden artifacts—consisting of a golden bat, ball, base, and glove—are stolen by a mysterious kingpin. The Commissioner of Baseball mobilizes four cybernetic, baseball-themed ninja heroes to recover the stolen relics across a cross-country tour spanning iconic American locations like San Francisco, Texas, and New York, battling bizarre mutated enemies, killer hotdogs, and robotic baseball players along the way.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game distinguishes itself through fast-paced, fluid beat-'em-up mechanics combined with comic-book aesthetics and vibrant sprite work. Players can choose from four distinct heroes: Jose (the leader), Ryno (the little guy), Straw (the tall hitter), and Bean (the heavyweight catcher). Each character boasts unique stats, reach, and special attacks that utilize their signature baseball bats. Combat features standard combos, dash attacks, and devastating spinning special moves performed by holding down the attack button or executing specific joystick motions. Notably, players can also perform high-flying aerial maneuvers and pick up scattered items—including food for health and various throwable weapons. The game supports up to four simultaneous players, creating chaotic, cooperative screen-clearing action punctuated by bombastic boss battles and humorous animations.
