Description

In the game, each player controls one of the two Bubble Dragons, Bub and Bob. The player can move along platforms, as well as jump to those above and to the side, similar to most platform games.

The player can also blow bubbles. These can trap enemies, who are defeated if the bubble is then burst by the player’s spiny back. The bubbles also float for a time before bursting, and can be jumped on, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible areas. Players progress to the next level once all enemies on the current level are defeated.

Bubble Bobble

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1986 and masterminded by designer Fukio Mitsuji (Fukasan), *Bubble Bobble* is a legendary arcade platformer starring the iconic green and blue dinosaur brothers, Bub and Bob. The whimsical storyline follows their girlfriends being kidnapped by the wicked Baron von Blubba and dragged deep into the 100-tier caverns of the Cave of Monsters. Transformed into bubble-blowing dragons themselves, the brothers must conquer every single subterranean labyrinth to rescue their loved ones and restore their true forms. Unlike standard action games of its era, *Bubble Bobble* pioneered branching pathways, multiple endings dependent on player cooperation, and a secretive item economy hidden deep within its stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around single-screen flip-screen platforming across 100 progressively difficult levels. Bub and Bob lack traditional offensive weapons; instead, they exhale magical bubbles that trap roaming enemies such as Zenchans and Monstas. Once an enemy is encapsulated, the player must collide with the bubble to pop it, defeating the foe and turning them into valuable scoring fruit, extended-time letters, or power-up items. Players can ride inside their own bubbles to float across otherwise impassable chasms. Managing momentum is vital, as lingering too long triggers the dreaded invincible ghost, Baron von Blubba, who relentlessly hunts the player until the round concludes. Strategic bubble-chaining—bursting multiple trapped enemies simultaneously—spawns cascading water waves or lightning bolts that clear the entire screen, adding immense depth to score-chasing and cooperative strategy.
