Tekken 3

Overview & History

Released in arcade halls in 1997 via Namco’s powerful System 12 hardware, Tekken 3 revolutionized the 3D fighting genre. Set nineteen years after the second tournament, the storyline revolves around the awakening of Ogre, the God of Fighting, who hunts legendary martial artists. To combat this ancient threat, Heihachi Mishima creates the Tekken Force, ultimately drawing in a new generation of fighters—most notably Jin Kazama, seeking vengeance for the apparent murder of his mother, Jun, by Ogre. This installment defined the PlayStation era and remains a pinnacle of arcade design, introducing fluid motion-capture animations and a darker, more cinematic atmosphere.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tekken 3 completely overhauled its predecessor's engine by replacing clumsy sidesteps with true, fluid 3D movement. Players could now effortlessly duck under high attacks or pivot around linear strikes by tapping up or down. The game also introduced the "Tekken Force" beat-em-up minigame and the beloved "Tekken Ball" mode. Character rosters expanded dramatically, introducing iconic staples like Hwoarang, Eddy Gordo, and Ling Xiaoyu. Combat relied on a distinct four-button layout—left punch, right punch, left kick, right kick—where precise string inputs yielded devastating juggles, reversals, and signature moves like Paul Phoenix's Death Fist or Jin's Electric Wind God Fist, demanding rigorous timing and spatial awareness.
