Description

Berlin Wall was produced by Kaneko in 1991.

The player takes control of a boy who must use his hammer to break the blocks that form part of the platform levels that form each stage. These holes act as traps for the many patrolling monsters and once one has fallen into a hole, the player may then use the hammer on the monster to make it fall through the hole and down to the platform below – causing it to change into fruit or power-ups, which can then be collected.

Kaneko planned to do a Sega Genesis conversion of this game but it was never released.

The Berlin Wall

Overview & History

Released in 1991 by Kaneko, The Berlin Wall (known in Japan as Wall Crash) is an obscure yet brilliantly quirky arcade platformer that cleverly subverts the historical tension of its namesake. Rather than dealing with geopolitical drama, the game drops players into a whimsical Cold War caricature where the protagonist must literally demolish architectural barriers brick by brick. Blending elements of classic puzzle-platformers like Crush Roller and BurgerTime, Kaneko created a vibrant, fast-paced score-chaser that stood out in smoky 90s arcades thanks to its pastel aesthetics, bouncy chiptune soundtrack, and uniquely destructive core mechanic.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control a plucky, helmet-wearing operative navigating multi-tiered, maze-like stages swarming with aggressively patrolling guards and strange mechanical menaces. The primary objective is to systematically clear out the maze by chipping away at and pushing down vertical segments of the titular Berlin Wall. Unlike standard platformers where you jump over obstacles, here the environment is your weapon and your puzzle. Characters can perform a signature pneumatic jackhammer punch to dislodge bricks, sending them sliding across the screen to crush pursuing enemies in a satisfying cascade of debris. Timing is everything: if you push a block too soon, you might trap yourself; if you hesitate, a red-capped soldier will corner you on the scaffolding. Clearing an entire screen of enemies while carving paths through the masonry advances you to increasingly complex levels, which introduce conveyor belts, teleporters, and volatile explosive blocks that chain-react across the board. Every stage demands spatial awareness, quick reflexes, and aggressive spatial management.
