Description

According to an ancient legend of the Kingdom of Etrulia, should the people get corrupted by wickedness, demons and devils would break through the Gate of Doom, ruling the land as their own. However, by the same time four heroes with different powers would be summoned by the Force Divine to destroy the monsters of darkness and using the magic gem and magic crown they would try to lock the Gate of Doom forever.

Dark Seal was originally released in arcades in 1990. It is a beat’em-up in a fantasy set. One or two players (in co-op mode) can choose among 4 different characters: the Knight (who has a strong weapon), the Wizard (who has powerful magic), the Bard (who’s immune to poison) and the Ninja (who has high-speed movement). The characters are viewed in an isometric perspective and can move and attack in all 8 directions, though they can’t move while attacking.

All characters wield mid-range weapons. The Knight uses a morning star, the Wizard uses a magic flame pillar, the Bard uses an elastic spetum and the Ninja uses shurikens. They can also use magical attacks when a magic meter shown at the side of the screen is full. A book of spells keeps flipping its pages, showing a different spell in each page. Once the player hits the spell button, the spell showing at that moment in the book is activated, transforming him or her into different elemental forms (a tornado, a sparkling cloud, a bush of fire, etc.), lasting until the magic meter is depleted.

The enemies are typical fantasy ones, such as skeletons, ghouls, kobolds, etc. Some of them can poison or confuse the players. Throughout the game, chests can be found containing items can be collected to fill the character’s life and magic meters, as well as items such as armor parts which can improve players stats.

Gate of Doom

Overview & History

Released by Data East in 1990 for arcades, *Gate of Doom* (known in Japan as *Dark Seal*) is a dark fantasy hack-and-slash top-down action RPG that immediately captured imaginations with its isometric perspective and thick, brooding atmosphere. Operating on Data East's custom hardware, the game predated the massive arcade boom of four-player beat 'em ups, carving out its own niche by blending frantic arcade combat with complex fantasy tropes. Players select from a quartet of distinct adventurers—the valiant Knight, the mystical Wizard, the agile Ninja, and the towering Bard—each tasked with traversing subterranean labyrinths to rescue a kidnapped king and seal the titular interdimensional portal. Unlike its contemporaries that favored modern or sci-fi settings, *Gate of Doom* fully embraced sword-and-sorcery grit, featuring grotesque beastmen, shambling skeletons, and multi-tiered boss encounters that tested both reflexes and tactical positioning.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop revolves around navigating treacherous, labyrinthine top-down stages while managing distinct character classes. The Knight wields heavy melee strikes and high defense, the Wizard unleashes devastating elemental area-of-effect spells, the Ninja utilizes lightning-fast shuriken ranged attacks and high mobility, and the Bard swings a flail while casting supportive enchantments. Players can collect various magic scrolls, armor upgrades, and temporary stat boosters scattered across destructible environments. A standout mechanic is the magic meter, which allows characters to charge up devastating screen-clearing spells. Additionally, the game supports cooperative multiplayer, letting friends combine their class abilities to stagger formidable bosses. The level design constantly introduces hazards like crumbling bridges, poison swamps, and sudden ambushes, keeping players on edge from the damp dungeons to the fiery depths of the underworld.
