Released by SNK in 1986, Athena is an eccentric, mythological platformer that casts players as the bored Princess Athena of the static realm of Victory. Seeking thrill and adventure, she opens a forbidden door in her castle and plummets into a surreal, multi-tiered underworld ruled by the evil Emperor Dante. Unlike its console ports, the original arcade version stands out for its unique progression system, vibrant sprite work, and the sheer audacity of stripping its royal protagonist down to a red bikini before she rebuilds her arsenal from mythical flora and fauna.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across eight distinct, vertically and horizontally scrolling zones ranging from lush forests and icy caverns to the fiery depths of Dante's domain. Athena starts nearly defenseless, but defeating enemies yields hidden items and power-ups that transform her combat capabilities. By collecting specific gear, she equips armor, boots, and helmets, or transforms into specialized forms like a winged mermaid or a centaur.
