Released in 1986 by Data East, BreakThru is an adrenaline-fueled, side-scrolling vehicular shooter that stands out in the golden age of arcade gaming. Set in a desolate future, the game’s storyline casts the player as the pilot of a specialized, heavily armed all-terrain scout car codenamed the PROTECTOR. Your critical mission is to infiltrate heavily fortified enemy territory across unforgiving landscapes—ranging from desolate wastelands and deep canyons to floating bridges and enemy-occupied military bases—to retrieve a stolen prototype jetfighter before adversarial forces reverse-engineer its advanced avionics. Unlike static platformers of its era, BreakThru delivers relentless horizontal momentum, forcing players to constantly adapt as the screen pushes forward, demanding swift reflexes and precise timing to survive the grueling assault.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around driving, jumping, and shooting your way through hostile terrain while managing the fragility of your vehicle. The PROTECTOR can accelerate, brake, and fire its forward-mounted cannons to obliterate tanks, turrets, and infantry. A defining mechanical feature is the vehicle's hydraulic jumping capability, which allows players to leap over bottomless chasms, debris, and low-flying enemy fire. However, the terrain is treacherous; missing a jump results in an instant lost life. As you progress, the vehicle can sustain limited damage, but taking too many hits causes the chassis to break apart.
