Description

On a planet 6000 light-years from earth, there were creatures called Exes, which resemble large insects, that were used for industrial purposes. However, these creatures one day took to revolting against their creators. Two battle machines have been sent to fight against the Exes, known as Colonel and Sargent. The Exes are nearing completion of their secret weapon, Exed Exes, and they must be defeated before this is allowed to happen!

Exed Exes is a basic vertical scrolling shooter; the game scrolls forward, and the player can maneuver their ship around the screen to shoot enemies and avoid attack. POW icons sometimes appear that can power up the ship or turn enemies into fruit that are worth extra points. The game can be played either solo or two-player cooperatively.

Exed Exes

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1985, Exed Exes (known in North America as Savage Bees) is a classic vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up that drops players into a surreal, bio-mechanical insectoid warzone. Distinct from contemporary sci-fi shooters of the mid-80s, Capcom opted for an unsettling naturalistic aesthetic, tasking players with annihilating swarms of giant mutant bees, dragonflies, and ancient insectoid deities. Unlike Capcom's later massive hit 1942, this title relies on a claustrophobic alien grid populated by chitinous horrors and floating hexagonal structures. The arcade cabinet utilized a standard 8-way joystick alongside a two-button configuration, immediately testing player reflexes through relentless bullet-hell patterns before the genre was even fully codified.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Piloting the "Cocker" fighter craft, players navigate a continuously scrolling top-down alien landscape. The core mechanic revolves around managing two distinct offensive tools: standard rapid-fire forward lasers and screen-clearing "Pow" bombs. Collecting scattered "Pow" icons charges your special meter, which instantly vaporizes all enemy sprites on screen—a vital mercy when the screen fills with thousands of tightly clustered projectiles. Furthermore, players must collect hidden special items to transform standard enemies into collectible fruit or point bonuses. Surviving the swarm demands strict memorization of enemy spawn points, as the mutant insectoids emerge from hive-like apertures in calculated, deadly formations that leave little room for error.
