Description

Flicky is an arcade platform game developed and published by Sega in 1984.

A female blue jay, named Flicky, must collect her chicks and lead them safely back to their nest, while they are chased by two cats. The cats make her chicks wandering off and try to eat her! Each level offers about a dozen objects like watering cans, hammers, and cups, to throw at and knock out the cats. The next level starts when all chicks are returned home safely.

Flicky

Overview & History

Developed by Sega and originally released in arcade halls in 1984 before finding legendary status on the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Flicky is a charming, fast-paced single-screen platformer. The game stars Flicky, an inquisitive blue bird on a rescue mission. The storyline is straightforward yet frantic: Flicky's mischievous yellow chicks, known as the "Chirps," have wandered away from the nest and are now scattered across dangerous, multi-tiered stages populated by stray cats like Tiger and roaming iguanas named Iguana. Designed by Yuji Naka before his work on Sonic the Hedgehog, Flicky introduced proto-mechanics of speed and momentum that would later define Sega's golden era. The arcade cabinet is celebrated for its distinctive visual style, pastel-shaded platforms, and an unforgettable, high-energy chiptune melody that loops incessantly as players dash across the screen.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Flicky operates on a unique trailing mechanic. As you navigate the platforms, you must track down the wandering Chirps. Walking into a Chirp causes it to follow directly behind Flicky in a single-file line. The primary challenge scales with the size of your convoy: the more Chirps you collect simultaneously, the longer and more unwieldy your trailing line becomes, making dodging the predatory cats exponentially harder. To successfully clear a stage, you must safely herd all surviving Chirps through the exit door at the top of the level. If a cat makes contact with Flicky or any of the trailing Chirps, the touched chicks scatter back into the level in a panic. Players can defend themselves by picking up and throwing projectile items—such as tomatoes, cups, and rocks—found scattered across the platforms to temporarily stun the pursuing feline enemies. Bonus rounds appear periodically, challenging players to catch falling Chirps in a net.
