Description

The game features two twins who are attempting to re-take control of their land, Alurea, after a monster unexpectedly attacks, destroying everything in its path. The people of Alurea have lived in peace for a thousand years and have forgotten how to fight, yet the land’s only survivors, the twin sons of the king, must take up the challenge and return their kingdom to its former glory. The two twins, aged around 15 at the time the game takes place, venture forth in search of a legendary stone known as “Dragon Blue Eyes”, which is rumoured to be able to put everything back to rights.

Mega Twins

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1990 for the CPS1 arcade hardware, Mega Twins (originally known in Japan as *Chiki Chiki Boys*) is a vibrant, whimsical fantasy action-platformer. Diverting from Capcom's gritty beat-em-ups of the era, the game thrusts players into the colorful, mythological realm of Alurea. The storyline follows the twin princes, Leon and Alistair, who must embark on a perilous quest to save their fantasy kingdom from the monstrous grip of the Lord of Darkness, reclaiming peace and restoring the land's surreal beauty.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mega Twins combines vertical and horizontal scrolling platforming with relentless hack-and-slash action across vibrant levels inhabited by bizarre creatures, mythical beasts, and tricky hazards. Players wield melee swords as their primary weapon, backed by magical elemental projectiles and screen-clearing bombs collected from fallen foes or smashed chests. Throughout the stages, the twins can collect glowing blue crystals to upgrade their offensive power and defensive capabilities. The game supports intense two-player cooperative play, allowing both princes to tackle hordes of grotesque bosses together. Unlike typical arcade games of the time, checkpoints are frequent, but survival demands precise jumping and mastery of the twin's fluid mid-air attacks to navigate treacherous bottomless pits and moving platforms.
