Taking place somewhere in space: an armada of Gidans, led by the evil Dogurava, is invading the planet Borogo aboard five gargantuan asteroids. After surviving an attack on an orbiting Borogo cargo barge, a pilot enters one remaining fighter and challenges the Gidans in a desperate attempt to quell the alien invasion and divert their asteroid fortresses in the process.

Truxton

Overview & History

Released by Toaplan in 1988, Truxton (known as Tatsujin in Japan) is a seminal vertically scrolling shoot 'em up that established the studio's reputation for punishing difficulty and relentless pacing. The storyline casts the player as the lone pilot of the Super Fighter spacecraft, dispatched to the toxic, biomechanical wasteland of the planet Gidoss to overthrow the tyrannical alien dictator Dogma. Unlike the clean sci-fi aesthetics of contemporaries like Gradius, Truxton introduces a gritty, biomechanical universe filled with mutated insectoid armadas and decaying metallic fortresses. Its iconic status was further cemented by Masahiro Yuge’s blistering, highly memorable FM synth soundtrack, which drove the frantic action forward across its five grueling stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay relies on a brutal three-tier color-coded weapon system, where collecting specific crystals transforms your ship's firepower. The blue laser deals focused, piercing damage to single targets; the red four-way shot offers wide crowd control; and the green weapon unleashes sweeping, homing plasma rings. The game's defining mechanic is the legendary "Skull Power-Up"—a rare item that temporarily turns your ship into a screen-clearing, invincible skull juggernaut capable of obliterating everything in sight. True to Toaplan's design philosophy, death strips you of all upgrades, dropping you back to a weak default weapon and spawning you instantly on the spot, creating intense recovery scenarios amidst bullet hell.
