Dragon Blaze

Overview & History

Developed and published by Psikyo in 2000, Dragon Blaze is a cult-classic vertical-scrolling arcade bullet hell shoot 'em up that pushed the limits of the PS-11 hardware. Set in a fantastical, dark medieval realm overrun by the demon king Nebilim and his monstrous hordes, the narrative follows four exiled dragon riders on a desperate mission to reclaim their world. Unlike traditional sci-fi shmups, this dark fantasy epic blends mythical beasts with frantic arcade action, culminating in one of the most mechanically distinct and visually atmospheric titles of the golden era of Japanese arcades.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Dragon Blaze revolves around a groundbreaking "Dragon Disconnect" mechanic. Players can separate their character from their mount mid-flight. When separated, the dragon holds its position, firing a concentrated stream of magic while the rider maneuvers independently, covering a wider area of the screen with their smaller hitbox and weapon spread. Players can also unleash a devastating "Dragon Dash" counter-attack by recalling the mount into enemies right after absorbing bullet fire. The scoring system heavily rewards aggression, as players must collect glowing crystals dropped by defeated glowing mid-bosses and familiars to multiply their score before time runs out. The game spans four grueling stages of chaotic enemy waves and screen-filling bullet patterns, followed by a relentless boss rush and a true final boss encounter accessible only to the most skilled pilots.
