Description

A magical/horror-themed ball-and-paddle game in the vein of Arkanoid/Breakout, based around the idea of defeating an evil magician and his army of minions from the Netherworld. One or two players (two may play simultaneously) set out to destroy the infernal spirits’ lair by manipulating fiery balls of magic.

Two balls are launched at a time, and must be caught and deflected to knock out all the colored blocks on each level, as well as the assorted ghosts, demons, zombies and other supernatural beings that try to impede your progress. Treasure chests can be broken for collectible score bonuses, and some blocks may unleash flying pixies, which award temporary power-ups if caught. Others release colored treasure balls – catch five in a row of the same color, and get a special power which stays active throughout the game (even after death).

Each group of stages concludes with a boss fight. Win, and you get to choose which path to proceed in, so the selection of levels may vary between games.

Ghox

Overview & History

Released by Toaplan in 1991, Ghox is a cult-classic arcade game that puts a mystical, ancient-civilization spin on classic paddle-and-ball mechanics. Standing distinct from the developer's traditional vertical shooters, this title tasks players with controlling wandering heroes who summon and manipulate sacred spheres to shatter monolithic stone structures, mythical beasts, and divine bosses. Set in a mythical fantasy realm where ancient gods have turned hostile, your quest is to climb the celestial towers and restore cosmic order across a series of increasingly frantic, vertically scrolling stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard block-breakers, Ghox operates as a platform-action hybrid. Players maneuver their avatars across the bottom and platforms of the screen, intercepting a rolling energy orb with a magical shield to bounce it back upward. Mastery relies on the unique ability to curve the ball’s trajectory by moving while deflecting it, or by unleashing a powerful spin-dash. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels allow you to split your sphere into multiple balls, encase them in elemental fire, or temporarily freeze descending enemies. Boss encounters require precision targeting, as you must maneuver your character safely through bullet-hell hazards while keeping the ball in continuous play to chip away at divine armor.
