Growl

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1990, Growl (known in Japan as Runark) is a gloriously over-the-top, eco-vigilante arcade beat-'em-up. Set in the 1920s, the storyline follows a rugged team of animal conservationists waging a one-man (or woman) war against a syndicate of ruthless poachers determined to slaughter wildlife for profit. Taito infused this title with frantic, unabashed B-movie action, featuring exploding environments, swarms of weapon-toting enemies, and massive boss encounters that push the hardware to its limits. Unlike standard urban brawlers of the era, Growl stands out for its sheer chaotic energy and unabashedly cartoonish environmental destruction, cementing its cult-classic status among retro arcade enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players choose from four distinct heroes—Gen, Burner, Rusty, and Khan—each bringing unique flair to the battlefield. The gameplay mechanics are designed for maximum destruction: players can punch, kick, and leap-attack, but the true joy comes from the arsenal of weaponry dropped by defeated foes or found in crates. You can wield whips, swords, lead pipes, bazookas, and even mounted machine guns to decimate poachers. The game's signature hook is the 'Animal Assistance' mechanic; rescuing caged animals like eagles, elephants, and leopards triggers devastating screen-clearing summoned attacks where the wildlife exacts sweet revenge on your oppressors. With branching enemy swarms, interactive hazards, and relentless pacing, Growl delivers a uniquely frantic arcade adrenaline rush.
