Description

The Fairyland Story puts the player in control of Ptolemy the witch, who must make her way through 101 single-screen rounds and defeat the evil purple dragon Dracolisk to retrieve the holy diamond and return peace to the land. Ptolemy’s main weapon is her magic attack, which turns enemies into cakes for a short while, then the enemies can be either destroyed by further magic attacks or by being dropped off a platform, possibly squashing other enemies below.

Released by Taito in 1985, The Fairyland Story is a charming, highly influential platform arcade game that directly laid the mechanical groundwork for Taito's later masterpiece, Bubble Bobble. The storyline casts players as the adorable witch Princess Lunlun, who must venture deep through 50 increasingly treacherous stages of a magical castle to rescue the fairyland from wicked monsters and reclaim her stolen royal domain. Designed by Mitsuhiro Uchida, the game eschews standard platformer jumping in favor of a screen-by-screen puzzle-action format where players must deliberately trap enemies, hatch magical strategies, and clear single-screen screenscapes to progress.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around Princess Lunlun's primary weapon: casting magical transformation spells. Lunlun cannot jump over enemies or attack them directly; instead, she shoots magic fireballs that encase foes in a protective, crystalline shell of spellcraft. Once trapped, Lunlun must physically push the encased monster from a higher platform to smash it against the floor below, triggering a chain-reaction slide that can wipe out multiple trailing enemies at once. Defeated foes frequently yield various high-scoring fruits, cakes, and special magical items, including speed boots, magic wands, and time-freezing hourglasses. Navigating the vertically-oriented castles requires precise ladder-climbing, careful positioning, and avoiding hazards like moving platforms and shooting fireballs. As Lunlun clears screens, she encounters tougher boss variants and escalating time limits, signaled by a menacing alarm that summons lethal phantom intruders if a stage drags on too long.
