Description

An organization known as the D.A.S. (The Dark Anarchy Society) uses magnetic doomsday machines to melt the polar ice caps and thus desolate the world. Although the entire world is flooded, a few societies survive to build over the highest structures they can find and continue living. In this post apocalyptic scenario, the D.A.S., who were prepared for this catastrophe, reign supreme over the survivors with martial law and military weapons of extraordinary power.
Upon learning of a new D.A.S. superweapon being developed, “Yugusukyuure”, the remaining survivors who are terrorized by D.A.S. secretly organize a rebellion force using a newly developed submarine known as the Granvia. The Granvia’s mission is to dive into D.A.S. enforced waters, territories and eventually the D.A.S. headquarters itself to destroy every single D.A.S. weapon in sight.

In the Hunt

Overview & History

Released in Japanese arcades in 1993 by Irem and subsequently ported to the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, In the Hunt (known in Japan as *Kaitei Daisensou*) is a visually arresting, military-themed side-scrolling shoot 'em up. Helmed by key creators who would later form Metal Slug developer Nazca, the game transports players into a post-apocalyptic, submerged world. The storyline follows a renegade eco-terrorist organization known as the Dark Anarchy Society, which has melted the polar ice caps, plunging the world's major cities underwater and subjugating humanity. Players control a revolutionary conventional attack submarine—the Granvia—tasked with navigating through sunken ruins, industrial bases, and deep-sea trenches to dismantle the syndicate's doomsday devices and restore the Earth's surface.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard aerial or space shooters, In the Hunt operates on a dual-axis plane where your submarine can traverse both submerged depths and the water's surface, occasionally allowing you to roll onto dry land. The game is celebrated for its stunning, meticulously hand-drawn sprite art and destructible environments, featuring massive multi-tiered bosses and vibrant explosions. Players face a relentless onslaught of enemy submarines, divers, mechanized sea monsters, and coastal artillery. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels upgrade your arsenal from standard torpedoes to devastating surface-to-air missiles, homing torpedoes, and heavy-duty mine-droppers, adding deep tactical choices for managing both underwater and airborne threats across its six punishing stages.
