Description

Hipopo waddles through many cute levels in search of his girlfriend. He rescues other captured hippo-like animals on the way. He throws globes full of water that gushes when it hits a wall or creature. The water attack is exactly like Taito’s Bubble Bobble water attack. The game is a 4-way scroller with very large levels and lots of surprises. Many of the levels have moving platforms, collapsing floors and other obstacles.

Liquid Kids

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1990 for the Japanese arcade scene (and later known as *Mizubaku Adventure*), *Liquid Kids* is a delightfully quirky platformer that utilizes Taito's signature charming aesthetic. The storyline follows Hipopo, a young hippo-like creature belonging to the peaceful Hippo Tribe, who must rescue his kidnapped girlfriend and homeland from the clutches of the evil Fire Demon, Woody. Unlike typical beat-em-ups of the era, the game trades traditional weapons for a unique elemental water-balloon mechanic, blending cute character design with surprisingly intricate level design across diverse, imaginative stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate Hipopo through vibrant, scrolling platform stages divided into distinct zones, fighting off hordes of whimsical, fire-themed enemies. Hipopo's primary offensive and defensive tool is his ability to generate and throw magical water balloons. Charging a throw increases the balloon's size, allowing players to drench multiple foes at once. Once an enemy is thoroughly soaked, they become stunned, acting as rolling projectiles that can clear out subsequent obstacles and enemies. Throughout the adventure, Hipopo can collect various power-ups hidden inside floating bubbles, granting temporary upgrades such as extended water range, speed boosts, or devastating elemental spells. Secret rooms, bonus fruit items, and mini-games hidden behind walls add immense replay value to this arcade gem.
