Description

Baby Roo has been kidnapped by monkeys, and it’s up to Mama Roo to come to the rescue! Your kangaroo starts out at the bottom of the screen. You need to guide the kangaroo up the various ladders and platforms to the top where Baby Roo is being held captive. The monkeys will be trying to stop you by throwing or dropping apples and knocking you off the platforms. Your kangaroo has boxing gloves, however, and can knock out the monkeys with a single punch! Along the way various types of fruit can be collected to earn bonus points.

Kangaroo

Overview & History

Released by Sun Electronics in 1982 and distributed in North America by Atari, Kangaroo is a charming yet surprisingly challenging platformer that predates the genre's standard conventions. The storyline casts you as a mother kangaroo whose beloved joey has been kidnapped by a mischievous gang of tree-climbing apes. Operating on a vertically scrolling single-screen stage, Mother Kangaroo must ascend a series of ladders and platforms across four distinct jungle levels to rescue her baby from a caged prison at the top. While visually reminiscent of Nintendo's early arcade hits, Kangaroo carved its own niche by introducing an offensive mechanic: unlike Mario, who could only jump over enemies, this protective mother could actively throw punches to clear her path.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around vertical navigation, timing, and aggressive defense. As you climb ropes and jump across ledges, you must dodge green apples thrown by the antagonistic apes while simultaneously punching them before they hit you. Additionally, players must leap over or duck beneath bouncing red apples and flying hazards. Scattered throughout the levels are bonus items—such as pineapples and bells—that yield extra points, as well as a power-up boxing glove that extends your reach. A unique tactical element is the bell: ringing it causes fruit to regenerate at the top of the screen, but it also triggers the apes to throw apples faster. The level design increases in complexity, introducing vanishing platforms and tighter time limits that demand precise joystick and button synchronization.
