Released by Data East in 1987, Karnov is a cult-classic arcade action-platformer that introduces players to Jin Borviz Karnov, a fire-breathing, bald-headed Russian strongman on a quest to retrieve stolen treasure from a dragon in the fictional land of Lamed. Distinguished by its eccentric protagonist—who later became a recurring mascot and crossover boss in Data East’s library—the game stands out for its surreal enemy design, blending mythological beasts, giant insects, and bizarre subterranean inhabitants across nine distinct scrolling stages. Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Karnov traverses hostile environments relying primarily on his signature fireball attack, which can be upgraded by collecting power-ups like the red ball to increase projectile distance and damage. Unlike standard platforming heroes, Karnov cannot jump high initially; players must acquire wing boots for temporary flight or utilize a pogo-stick item to bounce over hazards. The game features a strict health meter depicted as a row of hearts, making every encounter with aggressive fauna punishing. Players can also collect bombs to clear the screen of enemies, ladder icons to scale vertical cliffs, and various statues that grant bonus points.
