Description

The Killing Blade is a 1998 competitive fighting game released by IGS on arcade game machine. Development for the game took two years. In September 2005, IGS released a remake titled The Killing Blade Plus.

The Mongol invasion of China has left the country in ruin. Five sects consisting of twelve warriors battle each other, then find the defeat the black hand of the wars: The Twin Tartars and Lord Wizard. Victory would earn the title “Superior Martial Paladin” to conquer China, bring order and establish a new empire.

The game has a post Dynasty Wars setting and the game mechanics are similar to SNK’s The Last Blade franchise, including weapon and kick attacks, combo attacks and power charging.

The Killing Blade

Overview & History

Released in 1998 by the obscure developer IGS (International Game System), The Killing Blade (known in Chinese as *Ao Shi San Guo*) is a visually striking and wildly underrated 2D arcade fighting game. Set during a heavily fantasy-infused, mythical interpretation of China’s turbulent Three Kingdoms era, the game injects ancient folklore, Taoist magic, and celestial warfare into a gritty historical backdrop. It arrived during the twilight era of traditional 2D arcade cabinets, yet managed to stand out through its gorgeously hand-drawn sprite work, massive character sprites, and unabashedly over-the-top violence. Unlike typical arcade fighters of the late 90s, The Killing Blade heavily emphasized weapon-based combat, allowing characters to wield legendary swords, halberds, and magical fans, creating distinct spacing and priority dynamics that separated it from competitors like Capcom's or SNK's flagship franchises.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, The Killing Blade is defined by its deep, combo-heavy system and strategic use of the environment and weaponry. The game features a roster of historical and mythical figures, including iconic warriors like Guan Yu and Zhuge Liang, alongside supernatural entities and original fighters. Each character possesses standard light and heavy attacks, specialized weapon-drawing techniques, and screen-clearing super moves powered by a multi-tiered Chi meter. A standout mechanic is the weapon-clash system, which triggers cinematic stalemates when two heavy strikes collide simultaneously. Additionally, the game includes a rage mode that drastically increases attack power and alters character properties when health drops to critical levels. The pacing is frantic, demanding precise execution of quarter-circle and 360-degree inputs to pull off devastating juggling combos that can decimate an opponent's health bar in seconds.
