Description

Kingdom Grandprix is a 2D arcade shooter and racing combination – a continuation of Sorcer Striker. The game has many fantasy creatures and futuristic vehicles. The player chooses 1 of 8 characters – all others are rivals in the race. Player moves faster holding down the fire button (but then he is defenseless), and by getting closer to the top end of the screen. Beside this, the game is a typical vertical-scrolling shooter – player flies forward, shoots enemies and bosses, and collects various power-ups, like extra bombs, homing bullets, or more power to fire the gun. The game has twelve stages, but is non-linear – after completing each level, the player chooses one of the two levels.

Kingdom Grand Prix

Overview & History

Released in 1994 by Eighting/Raizing, Kingdom Grand Prix (known in Japan as Shippuu Mahou Daisakusen) is a brilliantly eccentric fusion of the traditional vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up and a high-speed fantasy racing tournament. Set in a whimsical medieval realm where the ultimate monarch is decided not by lineage, but by pure vehicular velocity, this arcade gem injects manic competitive energy into the bullet-hell genre. Unlike standard arcade shooters where survival is the sole objective, Kingdom Grand Prix introduces a clock-based race against rival pilots across diverse stages. Players select from a roster of vibrant, magic-wielding racers—ranging from brooding knights and reckless sorcerers to whimsical inventors piloting flying mechs. Each character boasts a distinct narrative motivation to claim the crown, complemented by unique firepower profiles and bomb attacks that alter your tactical approach to both crowd control and maintaining peak forward momentum through treacherous enemy territory.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core mechanic revolves around a dual-threat objective: clear out waves of fantastical enemies while maintaining blistering speed to outpace computer-controlled opponents on the track. The screen constantly scrolls vertically, but you must monitor a race position indicator at the top. Destruction of bosses rewards players with significant time bonuses and score multipliers. Controls utilize an 8-way directional lever for precise micro-dodging through dense patterns of magical projectiles, paired with two primary buttons: a tap for rapid standard shot and a hold for focused heavy fire, alongside a dedicated button to unleash screen-clearing screen-wiping magic spells. Power-ups scattered throughout stages upgrade your magical arsenal, transforming standard projectiles into devastating homing fireballs, piercing lances, or scatter-shot elements. Mastering the delicate balance between aggressive enemy annihilation and optimal pathing around stage obstacles is crucial for crossing the finish line in first place.
