Lethal Thunder

Overview & History

Released in 1991 by Irem, Lethal Thunder (known in Japan as *Thunder Blaster*) is a vertically scrolling arcade shoot 'em up that drops players into a grim, dystopian future. Earth's defense network has been hijacked by a rogue artificial intelligence and alien syndicate, threatening absolute annihilation of the human race. You pilot the prototype fighter craft, the Thunder Blaster, cutting through atmospheric storms, deep-space armadas, and subterranean biomechanical fortresses across six gruelling stages to dismantle the central mainframe.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Lethal Thunder distinguishes itself through its intense pacing, striking industrial sprite work, and dynamic weaponry system. Players collect power-ups that alter the ship's payload between wide-spread plasma bursts, concentrated laser beams, and homing missiles. A standout mechanic is the charge shot; holding down the fire button stores kinetic energy to unleash a devastating screen-clearing bomb blast capable of wiping out dense waves of enemy drones instantly. Boss encounters are multi-tiered endurance tests requiring precision dodging through bullet-hell patterns and targeting specific mechanical weak points.
