Description

You play Kage, a skillful ninja in search of rescuing Princess Kiri from the hands of the warlord Yoshi. Armed only with a sword and ‘star knives’, you must fight your way through countless henchmen and the occasional boss to complete your task. Levels include the forest, moat, inside and outside of the castle. These levels repeat as the seasons change. The gameplay is side scrolling. Kage’s moves include the ability jump extremely high in the air, grab and climb trees, block and attack with his sword, and throw shuriken. The game can be challenging at times though because the player dies in one hit. 2-players are supported, but must take turns.

The Legend of Kage

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1985, The Legend of Kage plunges players into the feudal Japan of the Iga ninja clan. Developed during the golden age of arcade gaming, the story follows young shinobi Kage, who embarks on a relentless rescue mission after Princess Kiri is abducted by the villainous warlords Yoshihide Kirisame and Yukikusa. Kage must battle through heavily guarded forest paths, scaling imposing castle walls and navigating treacherous palace interiors to save the princess not once, but twice, before securing true victory in the final showdown.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is celebrated for its blistering vertical and horizontal pacing, utilizing a sprawling, multi-directional scrolling world. Players wield a signature short sword for close-range combat and an infinite supply of shuriken to dispatch oncoming enemies from a distance. Kage's exceptional physical agility defines the mechanics: he can execute gravity-defying super leaps that launch him high into the canopy, scale stone fortress walls with lightning speed, and deflect incoming enemy projectiles with perfectly timed sword swipes. Enemies range from standard sword-wielding foot soldiers and fire-breathing monks to flying ninjas. Rescuing Princess Kiri transitions the game into higher difficulty loops with harsher weather effects and deadlier foes.
