Donkey Kong 3

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1983, Donkey Kong 3 marked a radical genre departure for the iconic franchise. Abandoning the platforming mechanics of its predecessors, this arcade cabinet transformed the series into a vertical-climbing fixed shooter, heavily inspired by titles like Centipede and Galaga. Rather than playing as Mario, arcade-goers assumed the role of Stanley the Bugman, a mild-mannered exterminator tasked with defending his greenhouse. The storyline finds Donkey Kong hanging from overhead vines, aggressively shaking the foliage to drop swarms of mutated insects down onto Stanley’s prize flowers. Though it did not achieve the massive cultural footprint of the original 1983 platformer, its unique hybrid of shooter mechanics and score-chasing urgency secured its place as a fascinating cult classic in Nintendo's arcade vault.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay unfolds on a single-screen vertical stage where Stanley must simultaneously fend off waves of descending bugs—such as bees, beetles, and caterpillars—while pushing Donkey Kong upward to the top of the screen. Stanley is armed with a specialized bug spray rifle. Continuously holding the spray button fires a stream of chemical mist that damages enemies and physically pushes Donkey Kong backward when aimed directly at him. Pushing the ape entirely off the top of the vines clears the stage. To maximize points and secure survival, players must strategically collect the Super Spray power-up, which temporarily upgrades Stanley's weapon into a devastating, wide-area sonic blast capable of wiping out entire insect swarms in seconds. Failure occurs if a bug steals a flower, if Stanley is touched by an enemy, or if time runs out.
