Description
Platform game using backpack to suck up enemies. Once enemies have been sucked up they can be used as ammunition. Game set in different countries with five stages per country.
The game involves one or two ghost-busters who can suck monsters, ghosts, aliens and various other oddball characters into vacuum-cleaner-like devices and spit them back as bouncing/rolling balls. Expelled enemies function as projectiles that can damage and kill other opponents on the screen when colliding with them. The game’s looks are reminiscent of Pang. Throughout the game, the player/s can collect letters of the alphabet found in randomly appearing bubbles in order to gradually spell the word “TUMBLEPOP”, the progress of which is permanently displayed at the bottom of the screen. When completed, players are transported to a bonus level which gives them the opportunity to obtain higher scores and an extra life, although this level is strictly timed. The word goes back to default after completion.
Tumblepop
Overview & History
Released by Data East in 1991 for the arcade, Tumblepop is a vibrant, single-screen platforming puzzle game that casts players as intrepid vacuum-wielding scientists. Tasked with clearing the Earth of mutated, alien-like mechanical monsters and bizarre creatures, players travel across globe-trotting stages from Egypt to the Statue of Liberty. Unlike Data East’s earlier hit Bubble Bobble, Tumblepop emphasizes rapid-fire suction and explosive crowd-control tactics across ten distinct, highly stylized worlds, culminating in chaotic boss battles.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The core gameplay revolves around using your proton-pack-style vacuum to scoop up smaller enemies, stack up to three inside your nozzle, and blast them back out as a powerful bouncing projectile. Defeating multiple enemies at once triggers cascading chain reactions, showering the arena with bonus letters that spell 'T-U-M-B-L-E' for extra lives, or high-value treasures like gold bullion and rubies. Each world features unique hazards—such as sticky mud pits or conveyor belts—and unique mini-bosses. Defeated creatures occasionally drop special power-ups, granting temporary speed boosts, wider vacuum beams, or screen-clearing elemental attacks like fireballs and electricity.
