ASO: Armored Scrum Object, also known as Alpha Mission (outside of Japan), is a vertical scrolling shooter arcade game created by SNK in 1985. Missiles are used to destroy ground enemies, while laser-like weapons are used for aerial opponents. Throughout each of the levels, the player must fight off waves of enemies that threaten several space stations, and a boss must be defeated at the end of each.

Released by SNK in 1985, Alpha Mission (known as *ASO: Armored Scrum Object* in Japan) is a pioneering vertical scrolling shooter that predated the developer’s later Neo-Geo dominance. Set in a distant galaxy, the storyline casts the player as the pilot of the advanced ASO space fighter, tasked with liberating the planetary system from the tyrannical alien forces of the Fulnil empire. Distinct from standard twitch-shooters of its era, this title introduced strategic resource management by blending traditional arcade action with modular armor upgrades and tactical map progression across multiple distinct operational sectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup titles where power-ups are strictly linear, Alpha Mission introduces a revolutionary Armor System. Players collect alpha and beta symbols that allow them to equip specialized modular armor—such as the Laser Armor, Fire Armor, or Heavy Armor—granting temporary invulnerability, massive firepower boosts, or terrain-destroying capabilities. However, these suits degrade over time and must be actively repaired or swapped out using collected energy panels. Additionally, players must strategically deploy tactical missiles to destroy segmented enemy ground structures and uncover hidden warp zones, which bypass difficult boss phases and accelerate progress through the game's escalating difficulty curves.
