Description

Darius II takes place sometime after the first Darius game. The colonized planet Darius is recuperating from its invasion from the alien Belser Army thanks to that game’s heroes Proco and Tiat. Darius’ inhabitants have since situated themselves on the planet Olga while Darius’ societies, architecture and attacked areas were being repaired. The space flight Headquarters established on Olga picks up an SOS signal coming from Earth, where the first colonists originated before colonizing Darius. The signal included the description of alien ships similar to those of the Belser Army. Suspecting that these might be their remaining Earthling ancestors, the people of Darius sends both Proco Jr. and Tiat Young to help them.

Sagaia

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1989, Sagaia is the North American arcade iteration of the legendary horizontally scrolling shoot-'em-up, Darius II. Operating on Taito’s powerful F2 arcade system board, the game serves as a direct sequel to the iconic 1986 original. Unlike standard linear arcade shooters, Sagaia retains the series' trademark branching stage structure. After defeating a zone boss, players are presented with a futuristic map screen allowing them to choose their next flight path, drastically altering the difficulty curve, background music, and ultimate conclusion across its vast, biomechanical planetary stages. The overarching storyline plunges players back into the cockpit of the Silver Hawk fighters—piloted by Proco and Tiat—to liberate the human race from the tyrannical Belser empire, this time fighting through subterranean caves, deep-sea trenches, and hostile space colonies populated by biomechanical, prehistoric aquatic lifeforms.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Sagaia distinguishes itself through its signature boss encounters, which are heavily themed after gigantic prehistoric sea creatures and aquatic monsters like coelacanths, trilobites, and giant squids, all rendered with impressive sprite scaling. To combat these threats, players must collect power-up crystals dropped by colored enemy formations to upgrade their arsenal across three distinct weapon categories: Missiles (ground-to-air or forward-firing ordnance), Bombs (which arc downward), and Lasers. Each category features multiple evolution stages, culminating in screen-clearing devastation. Additionally, capturing green power-ups surrounds the Silver Hawk with a durable energy shield that absorbs multiple enemy projectiles before shattering. Unlike the original three-screen arcade cabinet of Darius II, the single-screen presentation of Sagaia was redesigned for standard cabinets, tightening the playfield and demanding pinpoint tactical positioning, rapid-fire endurance, and precise memorization of aggressive enemy attack formations.
