Description

Vigilante forces have raided government military installations and “confiscated” tanks, planes, even warships! Pilot your G-LOC fighter to victory against the guerillas. Only you have the skills to get the job done and save the day!

G-LOC: Air Battle (G-LOC meaning “G-force induced Loss Of Consciousness”) is a 1990 air combat simulator arcade game developed by Sega AM2 for the Sega Y Board hardware. It is a spiritual sequel to After Burner II, featuring similar gameplay ideas and some recycled sound effects, though has always been publicly advertised as a different game entirely. The original arcade version runs on more advanced Sega Y Board hardware, and makes heavy use of sprite scaling & rotation and pre-rendered 3D graphics, anticipating the look of early texture-mapped 3D polygons.

G-LOC is notable for being one of the first video games to offer an R360 arcade cabinet which could rotate 360 degrees on all three axes, immersing the player in the action. These versions of the game are sometimes referred to as G-LOC R360, though the gameplay itself is identical.

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1990, G-LOC: Air Battle was Yu Suzuki’s ambitious spiritual successor to After Burner II, designed for Sega's jaw-dropping Y Board arcade hardware. Known primarily for its ultra-immersive deluxe cabinet variations—including a hydraulically controlled cockpit that rotated 360 degrees—the game thrusts pilots into the high-octane cockpit of the advanced CAF-01 futuristic fighter jet. Rather than featuring a sprawling narrative, the game focuses on a tense, classified military operation against a rogue global syndicate, tasking players with clearing hostile airspace across a series of escalating aerial showdowns before time runs out.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

G-LOC brilliantly revolutionized the standard sit-down arcade shooter by shifting the camera perspective. While regular stages feature a fast-paced, third-person rear chase view reminiscent of its predecessor, locking onto designated targets triggers an intense, first-person cockpit view. This cinematic zoom forces players to rely entirely on their HUD to dogfight nimble enemy jets. Offensive arsenals include a high-capacity Vulcan cannon for swift dogfights and a limited supply of lock-on micro-missiles capable of decimating multiple airborne bogies simultaneously. Defensive survival depends heavily on executing split-second barrel rolls using the dedicated bank buttons to dodge incoming enemy ordnance and surface-to-air missiles.
