Mystic Riders

Overview & History

Released by Irem in 1992, Mystic Riders (known in Japan as *Mahou Ke警비대* or *Mystic Riders*) is a whimsical, horizontally scrolling arcade shooter imbued with rich fantasy themes and folkloric charm. Standing apart from Irem’s grittier sci-fi output like *R-Type*, this arcade hidden gem drops players into a vibrant, magical realm overrun by goblins, flying demons, and colossal boss monsters. You assume the role of either Rabisan or Amal, two intrepid young spellcasters riding on enchanted, flying brooms. Armed with elemental projectiles and riding magic-infused hardware, your quest is to traverse five treacherous stages—ranging from haunted forests to mystical castles—to rescue the captured fairy kingdom. Utilizing Irem's robust M72 hardware, the game delivers gorgeously detailed pixel art, fluid sprite animations, and a bouncy, upbeat chiptune soundtrack that perfectly complements its whimsical yet frantic action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional vertical or horizontal shooters, *Mystic Riders* incorporates unique aerial-mount mechanics. Players navigate the screen using a traditional 8-way joystick while managing a two-button layout: one for standard magical projectile attacks and another for a screen-clearing bomb or special spell. A defining mechanic is the ability to pick up and hurl various environmental objects and enemies, turning minor foes into explosive projectiles against larger mobs. Collecting elemental crystal power-ups upgrades your primary wand attack, spreading your magical blasts to cover wider areas of the screen. The game also features intense cooperative two-player simultaneous action, allowing friends to team up and blanket the screen in spellfire. The level design requires precise positioning, as hazards and enemies swarm from both left and right, demanding quick reflexes and mastery of your broom's inertia.
