GunForce II

Overview & History

Released by Irem in 1994, *GunForce II* (known in Japan as *Geostorm*) stands as one of the most visually chaotic and technologically impressive run-and-gun arcade games of the 16th-bit era. Serving as a sequel to 1991's *GunForce*, this title was Irem’s fiery swan song for dedicated arcade hardware before the company largely exited the video game development scene. The storyline plunges players into a dystopian near-future where an alien-mutant hybrid menace has decimated Earth's military infrastructure. Armed with high-tech weaponry, a duo of unnamed commandos must fight through crumbling cities, deep-sea trenches, and organic alien hives to neutralize the extraterrestrial threat and rescue surviving humanity. Utilizing a heavily customized scaling and rotation graphics engine, *GunForce II* laid the direct design foundations for Nazca Corporation's legendary *Metal Slug* series—featuring several of the same developers who moved over shortly after its release.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessor, *GunForce II* amps the adrenaline to eleven by introducing frenetic vehicle-hijacking mechanics, fully destructible backgrounds, and a dizzying array of weapon pickups that drop from hijacked enemy units. Players can pilot walking mechs, armed helicopters, and rocket-launching motorcycles right in the middle of chaotic crossfire. The character moveset includes standard 360-degree firing, a combat roll for invulnerability frames during heavy bullet hell sequences, and a powerful melee knife attack for close-range combat. The sprite work is exquisitely detailed, featuring wonderfully grotesque organic boss transformations, massive explosions that litter the screen with debris, and seamless scaling effects that make every stage feel cinematic, dangerous, and utterly unpredictable from start to finish.
