the name of Athena. Following the end of that game, the goddess Athena returned
to heaven and faded from the minds of the mortals on earth below. The Athena in
this game is said to be a reincarnation of her and she has a normal job as a

Released by SNK in 1987, Psycho Soldier holds a legendary place in gaming history as one of the very first video games to feature a synthesized vocal theme song, aptly titled "Psycho Soldier." Developed as a thematic sequel to SNK's earlier 1986 arcade title Athena, the game follows Athena Asamiya, a modern-day high school student who is the descendant of the ancient warrior princess Athena. Guided by her psychic mentor Master Sy (a returning character from Ikari Warriors), she must travel through surreal dimensions to rescue the Earth from alien invaders. This title laid the crucial groundwork for Athena's enduring legacy as one of SNK's most iconic mascot characters, eventually cementing her as a staple in the The King of Fighters franchise. Distinctive for its side-scrolling platforming action mixed with vertical and horizontal scrolling stages, the game pushed arcade hardware of its era with massive boss sprites and a vibrant, albeit bizarre, sci-fi/mythological aesthetic.
