Description
An arcade fighting game, Street Smart puts the player in the shoes of the ass-kicking “Karate Man” who travels across the country to participate in the Tag Championship.
The game is played from a side-scrolling third person perspective in which players can move in any direction in a closed arena (limited by the cheering crowds and other street elements). Eight unique fighters must be faced in succession by using punches, kicks, and jumping against the progressively more difficult adversaries.
The arcade version features a cooperative two-player mode, but this was excluded in the PS Mini release. As an unique feature of the Genesis version players can bet money on the outcome of the fights, and if they win they can use that money to upgrade the character stats to suit their playing style. Also added to the Genesis version are a Vs mode and a new special move that depletes part of your lifebar.
Street Smart
Overview & History
Released by SNK in 1989, Street Smart is a gritty, pseudo-3D arcade fighting game that predates the traditional 2D sprite-based fighter boom. Departing from standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups like Double Dragon, this game focuses on one-on-one underground brawls inside chaotic, spectator-filled arenas. The storyline drops players into a brutal circuit of illegal street fighting where rough-and-tumble brawlers battle for sheer dominance and cash prizes. Set across various urban venues, matches are uniquely interactive: the surrounding audience isn't just scenery. Spectators and ring bosses actively interfere by throwing objects, pushing fighters back into the ring, or grabbing players to leave them wide open for devastating attacks. Before SNK mastered the genre with Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting, Street Smart experimented with scale, featuring massive, zoom-in character sprites that dynamically resized as fighters moved closer to or further from the screen's center, creating an immersive sense of depth long before hardware polygon rendering became standard.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike typical arcade fighters with strict health bars and defensive blocks, Street Smart relies on a points-and-money system where players accumulate cash based on performance, betting, and crowd favoritism. The roster features distinctive fighters like Karate master Leo and brute-force brawler Cliff, each boasting a specialized arsenal of moves. Players execute rapid punches, low kicks, flying leaps, and signature grappling maneuvers designed to slam opponents onto the unforgiving pavement. A standout mechanic is the ability to pick up and hurl miscellaneous street debris—ranging from wooden crates to heavy pipes—directly at rivals. Furthermore, players must constantly mind their positioning; getting too close to the edge of the screen invites the rowdy crowd to rough you up. Defeating a sequence of opponents leads to a dramatic title defense against the reigning champion, making every staged brawl feel like a high-stakes turf war.
