Description

Mille Miglia 2: Great 1000 Miles Rally was produced by Kaneko in 1995.

A driving game with top-down pseudo 3-D graphics. You can select one of ten cars and depending upon which vehicle has been chosen, you can select the starting point of the race. The game can be installed in a variety of cabinets using either a joystick and buttons or a steering wheel and foot pedals for control. This is a follow on to the original Rally series.

You have 60 seconds to get from the starting line to the finish line. Finishing within 60 seconds allows you to go on to the next race. If you lose, a continue option is available.
The screen scrolls fast. The only way you know about a turn coming up is by a little indicator that flashes with a picture of the turn. There are zig-zags, hairpins and all other cool turns, most of which you have to steer into in order to make it though. The play control using a joystick is a little awkward at first, but it becomes comfortable after a while.

Overview & History

Released in 1995 by Kaneko, Mille Miglia 2: Great 1000 Miles Rally is a visually striking arcade racer that captures the romanticism and high-speed peril of Italy’s legendary open-road endurance race. Serving as the sequel to the original 1994 hit, this iteration refines the isometric pseudo-3D perspective, thrusting players back into the mid-20th century. Rather than featuring a fictional sci-fi narrative, the game’s "storyline" is rooted in motorsport history, tasking drivers with navigating a grueling cross-country route from Brescia to Rome and back. Kaneko secured official licensing for a stunning roster of vintage collector cars, allowing enthusiasts to pilot meticulously detailed classic machines like the Ferrari 250 GTO, Porsche 350 Speedster, and Jaguar XK120. As players progress through successive stages, changing weather conditions, sweeping Italian countryside vistas, and increasingly congested civilian traffic elevate the arcade tension.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional circuit racers, Mille Miglia 2 operates on a strict, unrelenting time-extension mechanic. Players must barrel past designated check-points before a countdown timer reaches zero, while aggressively weaving through AI-controlled trucks, buses, and everyday sedans. The handling model strikes a fine arcade balance—drifting around sharp hairpin turns requires a deft combination of throttle management and the dedicated handbrake. Environmental hazards dynamically alter driving physics, with slick asphalt during rainstorms demanding precision steering. While traditional "character moves" do not apply, players select distinct co-drivers at the start of the race who audibly bark directional pace-notes, giving crucial advance warnings for blind curves.
