Description

Shadow Force is a 2D side-scrolling beat ’em-up game that puts players in the shoes of either ninja Kai, swordfighter Blunet, muscleman Tengu or beastman Coyote. The human race is threatened by dr. Wong and his Teaser organization. And now it’s up to you to stop him and his evil organization.

As you make progress you encounter over twenty different enemies. These include soldiers, samurais, blobs that take your form, monsters and bosses. You have the ability to transform in to these enemies and fight in their form. Between the stages you play a versus fighting game and the order of the first three stages is free to choose. Along the way health can be replenished by consuming food. The game can be played solo or with a friend.

Shadow Force

Overview & History

Released in 1993 by Technōs Japan—the legendary masterminds behind the Double Dragon franchise—Shadow Force (subtitled Shadow Force: Henshin Ninja in Japan) is a visually striking and wildly creative side-scrolling beat-'em-up for the arcade. Set in a cyberpunk dystopian future threatened by the malevolent Zorg organization, the game tasks a covert strike team with hunting down the stolen bio-organic weapons core. What sets Shadow Force apart from contemporaries of its era is its groundbreaking possession mechanic, allowing players to briefly hijack the bodies of ordinary enemies, mid-bosses, and even innocent civilians to wield their unique attacks and maneuverability.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard cooperative brawlers, Shadow Force grants each of its four selectable characters—the martial artists Blue and Gen, and the futuristic cyborgs Alpha and Beta—a staggering array of standard and special moves. Players can execute slide kicks, suplex throws, aerial combos, and devastating screen-clearing energy blasts using a traditional three-button arcade layout (Attack, Jump, and Transform). The marquee feature is the transformation mechanic: by capturing specific glowing foes or accumulating enough energy, characters can cast off their human or cyborg shell, instantly converting into powerful beasts, armored mechs, or floating spectral entities. Each possessed form comes with a completely distinct moveset, massive health pools, and game-changing mobility options that completely alter how players approach enemy hordes and environmental hazards.
