The Ninja Warriors

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1987, The Ninja Warriors is a legendary arcade side-scrolling beat 'em up renowned for its unprecedented cinematic presentation and dystopian premise. Set in a futuristic America ruled by the tyrannical president Banglar in the year 1993, the government creates two advanced humanoid cyborg ninjas—Ninja and Kamaitachi—programmed to infiltrate the regime and assassinate the dictator. The arcade cabinet itself was a marvel, utilizing a massive, custom triple-wide widescreen monitor setup that spanned three CRT screens horizontally, immersing players in a panoramic warzone accompanied by Zuntata's driving, industrial synth-rock soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard beat 'em ups of the era, The Ninja Warriors strictly limits movement to a 2D plane with no vertical depth, forcing players to master precise positioning, blocking, and crowd control against waves of armed soldiers, mutant dogs, and heavily armored bosses. You choose between Ninja (wielding a deadly katana) and Kamaitachi (wielding twin short sickles and shurikens). As you take damage, your cyborg body visibly sustains battle-damage, shedding armor plating and flesh to reveal chrome endoskeletons underneath. A desperate "Self-Destruct" bomb mechanic wipes the screen of enemies at the cost of your own health, adding high-stakes tactical depth to survival.
