Ninja-Kun: Majou no Bouken

Overview & History

Developed by UPL and released to Japanese arcades in 1984, Ninja-Kun: Majou no Bouken (Ninja-Kun: Adventure of the Demon Castle) is a seminal platformer that predated and heavily influenced Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. and Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins. The game casts players as the pint-sized, yellow-clad trainee ninja, Ninja-Kun, on a perilous quest to ascend a multi-tiered demonic fortress, vanquish a horde of yokai and monsters, and rescue his captured master. Its unique vertical-scrambling formula spawned a beloved franchise, directly leading to the even more famous Famicom sequel Ninja JaJaMaru-Kun.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling platformers of its era, Ninja-Kun takes place across static, single-screen vertically stacked platforms wrapped in a labyrinthine feudal castle layout. The primary goal on each stage is to eliminate all patrolling enemies—ranging from flying Tengu and ghosts to creeping frogs—by utilizing Ninja-Kun’s signature shuriken projectiles. However, ranged attacks are finite or require specific tactical pacing; therefore, close-quarters combat is crucial. Players can stun enemies by jumping on their heads, leaving them vulnerable to a swift finishing blow. Adding a layer of frantic strategy, players can collect mystical scrolls hidden across the stages to unlock powerful, temporary abilities such as invincibility or a screen-clearing blast. The game also features a momentum-based vertical movement system, allowing Ninja-Kun to scale walls and safely drop down from platforms that standard platforming heroes would suffer fatal fall damage from.
