Description

In the year 2100, the Earth’s environment is devastated by its inhabitants, who develop their space technology to live on Mars. Before they left, the humans created a Bio-Computer assigned to replenish Earth’s ecosystem in hopes of returning to Earth. 50 years after terraforming parts of Mars, the human colonists were attacked by mysterious, but hostile UFOs. The military leaders among the colonists set up an attack force to defend the colonists using state-of-the-art fighter ships identified as the Icarus. The main operation of attack is called “Acrobat Mission” because it exceeds the technical flying ability of the pilots.

Acrobat Mission

Overview & History

Released in 1991 by UPL, Acrobat Mission is a vertically scrolling arcade shoot-'em-up that stands apart from its contemporaries through its distinct sci-fi aesthetic and relentless pacing. The game drops players into the cockpit of advanced aerial combat craft tasked with repelling an aggressive alien invasion across surreal, shifting planetary landscapes. Unlike standard military-themed shmup titles of the early nineties, Acrobat Mission infuses its universe with vibrant, biological-mechanical hybrids, striking pastel-tinted backgrounds, and a memorable electronic soundtrack that pushes arcade Yamaha FM synthesis to its limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around a versatile weapon upgrade system and high-stakes offense. Players can collect various power-up crystals that alter their ship's primary forward cannons into wide-spread lasers, concentrated plasma beams, or sweeping wave shots. A standout feature is the satellite option system, which mirrors player movements or can be detached to act as stationary turrets, allowing for strategic crossfires against swarms of diving insectoid and mechanized foes. Boss encounters are multi-stage affairs requiring players to memorize complex bullet-hell patterns while exploiting brief windows of vulnerability in massive, biomechanical leviathans.
