Description

The gameplay of Final Star Force goes back to the formula of the original Star Force, but with updated graphics and some extra power-ups. Other things that have been changed from the original are the style of the title screen’s logo, the background, and some enemies. Players control the two space fighter ships Blue Nova and Red Nova. There are three different power-ups to choose from called “Pulsators”. Each name of a Pulsator has a letter at the beginning of it (e.g. A-Pulsator, B-Pulsator, C-Pulsator). The power-up system is similar to the one seen in the 1990 Raiden arcade game. Unlike other games that requires players to obtain powerups to enhance their ships, the power meter itself charges up automatically to increase their fighters’ power.

Final Star Force

Overview & History

Released in 1992 by Tecmo, Final Star Force is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up that serves as a spiritual and chronological successor to Tehkan's 1984 classic, Star Force. Eschewing the purely abstract outer space setting of its predecessor, this arcade sequel infuses a heavy dose of biopunk and organic machinery aesthetic, tasking players with battling the rogue, mutated Gorgon empire that threatens to consume the galaxy. Operating on Tecmo's specialized hardware, the game pushed vibrant, colorful sprite scaling and detailed backgrounds that stood out during the golden age of arcade shooters, though it faced fierce competition from Capcom and Cave titles of the same era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional shmup formulas where power-ups merely upgrade a single gun, Final Star Force introduces a dynamic option system utilizing detachable sub-crafts. Players pilot the advanced fighter craft through six distinct, increasingly surreal stages, ranging from organic caverns to bio-mechanical hive worlds. The primary mechanic revolves around collecting color-coded crystal power-ups dropped by specialized enemy formations. These crystals alter your weapon spread—ranging from wide-angle plasma waves to concentrated laser beams—and can be charged up to unleash a devastating screen-clearing bomb attack known as the 'Nova Strike'. Furthermore, the game features destructible environments and hidden bonus items, rewarding memorization and precise micro-dodging through bullet-hell patterns.
