Description

A vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up with some similarities to Spy Hunter.

You begin the game controlling a motorcycle shooting at enemy cars and motorcycles. After picking up a number of power-up letters, you transform into a red sports car with upgraded weapons and continue shooting at enemy cars and motorcycles. After some more power-up letters, you transform again, this time into a flying car. The game then becomes a flying shooter. As a flying car, you are able to bomb targets on the ground, as well as shoot down enemy airships. There are boss fights both on the ground and in the air.

Action Fighter

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1986, Action Fighter is a vehicular combat arcade game that blends high-speed road racing with frantic side-scrolling shooter action. Long before the era of open-world driving titles, Sega conceptualized a dual-layer progression system where players pilot a versatile, transforming motorcycle across diverse global terrains—ranging from sun-drenched coastal highways and dense urban environments to perilous deep-sea trenches. The game's narrative casts you as a secret agent tasked with dismantling a syndicate of international terrorists before they unleash global destruction. Distinct from its later Master System port, the original arcade cabinet utilized a specialized dual-axis stick and intense sprite-scaling technology that gave a remarkable pseudo-3D perspective to the driving segments.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loops between two distinct modes: an overhead vehicular chase and a side-scrolling shooting phase. Players begin astride a heavily armed motorcycle equipped with standard twin blasters. By collecting specific power-up letters—spelling out "P-O-W-E-R" or nabbing transforming icons—the motorcycle can dock with support jets or submarines, morphing into a roaring fighter jet for aerial dogfights or a submersible craft for aquatic combat. Combat requires constant tactical balancing between evading incoming enemy fire, destroying pursuing biker gangs, and managing limited ammunition. Boss encounters punctuate each stage, demanding precise timing to dodge barrage patterns while exploiting vulnerable weak points.
