Ninja Emaki

Overview & History

Released by UPL in 1986, Ninja Emaki (known in Japan as Ninja Kazan) is a visually striking and delightfully eccentric arcade action game set in a fantastical, mythic version of feudal Japan. Diverting from the ultra-gritty ninja tropes that would later dominate the late 80s, this title blends historical shinobi warfare with surreal folklore, pitting a lone warrior against an invading army of grotesque demons, rival clans, and magical beasts. The game stands out for its vertical-scrolling and multi-directional combat stages, offering a distinct rhythm compared to standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups of the era. Its vibrant, parchment-inspired aesthetic and whimsical enemy designs give it a timeless arcade charm.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control Kazan, a heroic ninja on a quest to rescue a captured princess. The game plays out across varied stages featuring both horizontal skirmishes and vertical ascents up perilous cliff sides and castle walls. Kazan is armed with a standard melee sword for close-quarters slashing, but the real depth of the gameplay lies in its collectible magic scroll system. By gathering specific scrolls scattered throughout the levels or dropped by defeated sub-bosses, Kazan can transform into mythical beasts or elemental forces—such as a soaring firebird or a giant protective guardian. These transformations not only grant temporary invulnerability and devastating area-of-effect attacks, but are often required to bypass environmental hazards or defeat towering stage bosses like giant stone giants and supernatural samurai warlords. Timing your transformations and managing your shuriken inventory adds a surprising layer of tactical depth to the fast-paced arcade action.
