Description
Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom is an early arcade game developed by Sega for VCO Object hardware. It uses the Buck Rogers comic book/television license, and stands as one of Sega’s first licensed video games, along with Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator, both debuting in 1982. The game is adapted from the earlier Zoom 909, a largely identical game seen predominantly in Japan.
You’re Buck Rogers, and you’re on a mission to stop a wandering “warrior-world” called the Planet of Zoom before it reaches Earth. Like a certain moon-sized space station, the Planet of Zoom devastates everything in its path. The Planet of Zoom is controlled by a source ship. Destroying the ship liberates the Planet of Zoom, saving Earth in the process.
The game has only eight stages (“sectors”), with the mothership as the final (and only) boss. Clearing the game puts you on the next loop, with the message “NICE PLAY, GO ON.” The arcade actually displays how many loops you’ve run (labeled as “rounds”) as well.
At the start of the game (and at each loop), the source ship you fight at the end zooms past, and leaves a missile in its wake. It’s flying higher than you can shoot so you can’t damage it at all.

Overview & History
Released by Sega in 1982, Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom plunges players into a dazzling, pseudo-3D sci-fi gauntlet based loosely on the classic comic strip hero created by Philip Francis Nolan. Powered by Sega's innovative hardware architecture, the arcade cabinet delivered a breathtaking sensation of depth and frantic velocity years before true polygon engines became the industry standard. Tasked with piloting the starfighter through an alien sector to destroy the colossal Zonoom mother-ship, players must navigate an unforgiving cosmic landscape where humanity's survival hinges on fast reflexes, precise spatial awareness, and nerves of steel under relentless pressure.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
The game unfolds across a sequence of distinct, heart-pounding stages. In the first phase, your ship tears across a turbulent, cavernous trench peppered with jagged stationary pylons and mobile enemy fighter craft that materialize from the horizon. Depth perception is vital here, as misjudging the distance to a glowing tower means instantaneous vaporization. Surviving this grueling obstacle course leads directly to an orbital dogfight against menacing, buzzing Zylon saucers that swarm the screen in aggressive formations. Controls govern your ship's movement via an analog flight yoke, allowing you to bank sharply left and right or pitch up and dive while your dual-blasters lay down a continuous stream of suppressive green laser fire. A dwindling fuel timer adds agonizing urgency, forcing you to constantly shoot glowing energy spheres scattered throughout the course to top off your reserves before your engines stall in the deadly vacuum of space. The ultimate test awaits at the final docking phase, where you must thread your ship through a microscopic exhaust port of the massive mother-ship to trigger a catastrophic chain reaction and secure victory.
