Description

Frenzy followed the basic paradigm set by Berzerk: the player must navigate a maze full of hostile robots. The goal of the game is to survive as long as possible and score points by killing robots and travelling from room to room. The game has no end other than the player losing all of his or her lives.

The player has a gun with which to shoot the robots, and simple intelligence of the robots means that they can often be tricked into shooting one another. If the player lingers too long in a room, a bouncing smiley face (known as “Evil Otto”) appears, and relentlessly chases the player. Evil Otto will destroy any robots in his way, and can move through walls.

Frenzy

Overview & History

Released in 1982 by Stern Electronics, Frenzy stands as the direct, blood-pumping sequel to the iconic multi-directional shooter Berzerk. Designed by Alan McNeil, the game retains the lethal wireframe maze aesthetic of its predecessor while supercharging the difficulty and introducing the haunting, digitized voice synthesis that famously warns players, "Chicken, fight like a robot!" Set on a distant penal colony, players once again assume the role of an unnamed astronaut trapped within a seemingly infinite labyrinth of electrified, color-cycling walls. Unlike standard arcade titles of the era that relied on static backgrounds, Frenzy utilizes procedurally generated, destructible rooms that react dynamically to weapons fire. While it didn't achieve the runaway commercial saturation of Pac-Man, it carved out a fiercely loyal cult following among hardcore arcade veterans due to its relentless pacing, punishing trial-and-error mechanics, and the looming, terrifying presence of the indestructible smiley-faced automaton, Evil Otto, who mercilessly hunts the player down if they linger too long in any single arena.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Frenzy is a fast-paced maze shooter where survival requires constant movement and precise spatial awareness. The player navigates grid-based rooms populated by armed humanoid robots that can shoot back, blast through obstacles, and corner their prey. A defining gameplay innovation in Frenzy is the introduction of varied wall types: solid barriers, bouncing energy walls, and deadly conductive walls that instantly disintegrate anyone—player or robot—who touches them. Players must lure robotic enemies into walking into their own lethal perimeter barriers to clear the room safely without wasting precious ammunition. Furthermore, shooting the exterior walls creates gaps that let enemies enter from adjacent chambers, forcing players to constantly adapt their positioning. The ultimate panic-inducing mechanic remains Evil Otto, who bounces relentlessly through internal walls and across the screen, completely immune to laser fire, demanding that every room be cleared under strict time pressure before the invincible green sphere descends to claim another life.
