Description

In this side-scrolling shooter, you can transform your ship into most of the enemy ships you encounter by destroying them with a secondary weapon, then touching the hologram left behind. The forms you can take on have their own primary and secondary weapons, and some can take multiple hits before being destroyed. If your transformed ship is destroyed, you return to normal without losing a life. This game was ported to the Super Famicom console.

BlaZeon

Overview & History

Released by Atlus in 1992, BlaZeon: The Bio-Cyborg Challenge is a sci-fi horizontal scrolling shoot-'em-up for the arcade that pushes players into a gritty, biomechanical warzone. Set in the distant future where humanity fights against a rogue bio-organic supercomputer known as Zemu, the plot tasks pilots with deploying the Bio-Cyborg tactical fighters—advanced hybrid ships built from fused organic and mechanical matter. While it also saw a Super Nintendo port later on, the original arcade version remains the definitive way to experience its oppressive, Giger-esque aesthetic and punishing difficulty curve.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional shmups where power-ups merely upgrade your primary weapon, BlaZeon introduces a distinctive possession mechanic. Players pilot a standard bipedal mech that can capture and commandeer specialized mini-bosses and mid-tier enemies mid-stage. By weakening specific enemy units and striking them with a capture beam, you instantly hijack their chassis, absorbing their unique offensive capabilities, health bars, and mobility traits—ranging from heavy tank treads to agile flying stingrays. This forces dynamic tactical decisions, as sacrificing a captured craft lets you revert to your base form when health depletes. The controls utilize an 8-way directional joystick for navigation alongside a dedicated primary fire button, a secondary bomb/missile clearing attack, and the crucial capture trigger to enslave enemy hardware.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move the Bio-Cyborg fighter across the screen
  • Action Keys: Attack / Fire primary weapon, bomb, and capture beam
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game
